چکیده

Natural selection is usually assumed to increase the frequency of an advantageous allele or to decrease the frequency of a deleterious allele over time. There are mechanisms that can maintain genetic variation over time, such as cycling environments that favor one allele for a time and then the other and frequency dependent selection, where rare alleles are selected over the more common allele (see Hedrick, 2005, for a discussion of these selection topics). Fisher (1922) first noted that a stable polymorphism for a pair of alleles of a gene would also occur if the heterozygotes (A1A2) were more fit than either of the homozygotes (A1A1 and A2A2). Fisher (1922) stated:

Selection in Experimental Populations of Drosophila Melanogaster with Different Genetic Backgrounds.

HE heterozygous carriers of some genetic variants are superior in fitness to Tthe corresponding homozygotes. The causation of this hybrid vigor or heterosis (euheterosis according to DOBZHANSKY 1952) constitutes an important but as yet little understood problem. One possibility is that some gene alleles are “overdominant” with respect to fitness, and thus give heterosis in heterozygous conditio...

Further Data on the Overdominance of Induced Mutations.

O N E of the greatest challenges facing population genetics is the evaluation of the role of overdominance in the determination of fitness. Were overdominance nonexistent, “normal” individuals would be those fortunate enough to possess an entire complement of “normal” genes. If mutant genes were completely recessive, individuals possessing at least one normal allele at each locus would be norma...

Signals of major histocompatibility complex overdominance in a wild salmonid population.

The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) contains the most variable genes in vertebrates, but despite extensive research, the mechanisms maintaining this polymorphism are still unresolved. One hypothesis is that MHC polymorphism is a result of balancing selection operating by overdominance, but convincing evidence for overdominant selection in natural populations has been lacking. We present ...

N spite of the fact that radiation-induced and spontaneous mildly deleterious mutant genes (or mutant viability polygenes) show overdominance in an otherwise homozygous genetic background (WALLACE 1957, 1958, 1963; BURDICK and MUKAI 1958; MUKAI, CHIGUSA and YOSHIKAWA 1964; MUKAI, YOSHIKAWA and SANO 1966), the results of recent investigations have indicated that the manifestation of overdominanc...

Heterozygous alleles restore male fertility to cytoplasmic male-sterile radish (Raphanus sativus L.): a case of overdominance

The practice of hybridization has greatly contributed to the increase in crop productivity. A major component that exploits heterosis in crops is the cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS)/nucleus-controlled fertility restoration (Rf) system. Through positional cloning, it is shown that heterozygous alleles (RsRf3-1/RsRf3-2) encoding pentatricopeptide repeat (PPR) proteins are responsible for restori...
